CentOs4 crash after adding spare dirve Help!

Post by telmove » 2007/03/13 20:42:06

My machine was running just fine.
I needed to restore a couple of files from a hard drive that used to be in this machine before.
I have 2 sata II 500gb drives (1tb).
I shut down, added the 100 gig ide drive, set the bios to the correct boot order (booting to the 500 gb drives)
and rebooted.
I came up to a (none) lonin: prompt.
I then shut down and removed the 100gb drive and rebooted.
all I have now is a curser in the top left.
What did I do wrong???
Pleas help me out
Thanks

CentOs4 crash after adding spare dirve Help!

Sorry that there has been no help. I also do not understand what has happened to cause this. I have used CentOS for a while (and RH/FC/etc before) and have not come across your issue myself. There was a recent post of a similar issue like you describe if you do a quick forum search. Sadly, I don't remember if we were able to help :-(

I would suggest next using the man CentOS CD/DVD in "linux rescue" mode as to not do anything to your system (or even Knoppix) rather than boot into the normal OS with a temp drive.

Hi,
After the problem that I had the other day I just reinstalled from scratch onto my 2 new 500gb drives which worked fine. I just needed to recover some of the files from the old drives and here I am again right back in the same place I was the other day.
I think that the drives are not mounting correctly. all of my data is here but the drives do not mount.
could you help me look at what is /is not mounting and maybe this will get me back up and going faster than a complete new reinstall again.
Thanks,
Dave

mount -a results:

mount point /dev/shm/ does not exist

mount -l results:

/dev/VolGroupoo/LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw,defaults)
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw,defaults) [/boot]
none on /proc type proc (rw,defaults)
none om /sys type sysfs (rw,defaults)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5mode=620

What else is needed to figure out what I am missing?
Thanks

:-D
Ok I have it resolved!!!

After 30 hours last week and 3 hours today I finally learned that I can just install/upgrade from the installation CD and reformat the /boot partition without losing my /home content.

This worked like a charm.

I hope this works for anyone that has the same problem hopefully I can save you the AGONY!
