ia64 Centos 4.3 Crashes after /sbin/loader on Dell PowerEdge

Not sure if IA64 belongs here, but, seemed like the most relevent group.

System: Dell PowerEdge 7150. 4-Itanium 800Mhz CPU's / 4GB ram as 8/512mb dimm's - 4 per carrier - no interleaving.
Disk: Two configs: A) PERC2/DC/128MB w/ 4-18GB / org'd as 51GB RAID5. B) Qlogic 12160 w/2 18GB JBOD.

Centos 4.3 IA64... Dell Bios Rev: A02.
System crashes with both disk configurations, just after /sbin/loader starts.

Now to get the obvious stuff out of the way:
A) I know that the PERC2 is not supported, that's why I tried the native QLOGIC as well. Crashes at same point.
B) I did try to run it in text mode:: ( elilo linux text ) still crashes -- same behavior.

Now the non obvious stuff:
a) System does run Debian 3.1 (sarge) with 2.6.8-2-itanium-smp -- Dmesg file available if helpful. System stable in not a bit useless.
(I'm RedHat fluent and too old for a completely new distro -- thanks very much!)
b) Crashes into register dump, but, no other relevent diagnostic codes. No breakpoints or help available from console. Locked up tight.

Not sure if I am doing anything much wrong, but, it won't load.
I just selected all the BIOS defaults and let it fly... Seemed OK for the Debian.. (which ain't much of an OS, so it might not be saying much).
Only Debian issue is that X Server will not work... Dies with ( MMIO mapped version of chip not supported )... So, I disabled it.

I have Centos 4.2 running on XEON and ALPHA cpu's.. so I do have a bit of experience loading it.
I also have partial LINUX systems running on SGI Origin 200 and HP 735 systems, so, arcane arts are not completely lacking.

I would like to use the Dell 7150 to replace an aging Compaq 6500 Xeon, but not much luck so far..

Any comments or insights ???

I have something I will try...

I got 2.6.17 generic to run on the Debian flavor, so, I will build a version on the Dell dependencies and splice this into the 4.3 CD's..
Should be an interesting, if unsupportable, fix.. But may just cut the mustard for my uses...

If anyone is interested in the notes and results I will post them... Yes... I realize that Centos is supposed to be an enterprise O.S. ... but's what's someone to do if they have the hardware and application and nothing but a workstation O.S. to try and run ???

I have another alternative.
Centos 3.7 gets past the /sbin/loader issue.
I will take a stab at loading the 3.7 and rebuild the 4.3 from sources and try to upgrade the system.

Looks like I have a couple of possibilities if no one has a direct idea as to why this is happening...

This system is now running stable with Centos 3.7.

The 4.x issue seems to be around the video hardware / frame buffer. The systems panics at the approximate time it would go into frame mode.

I was not able to get the X server to stabilize with the 2.4 kernel/CentOS 3.7, but, since the machine needs to run a */database -> middleware -> web server/* and is doing well with it, no further efforts on the X server need to be spent.
