install type for dual 64-bit Xeon procesor server

Post by ignoramus » 2006/08/16 18:35:18

I have CentoOS 4.3 (x86) install on 4 CDs.

Are there any issues about installing this on a machine with a 64-bit processor?

I'm concerned with using the x86_64 install because:
- maybe I won't be able to use all the applications I can with the x86 install
- maybe it will be hard to install Oracle on it
- maybe it has more bugs than the x86 install

But maybe you can convince me that my fears and doubts are unfounded and that I should use the x86_64 install instead.

What do I lose if I use the x86 install instead of the x86_64? A little in performance? A lot in performance?

Thanks

Install which version you want to install...........

I can tell you the the 64-bit version will work just fine even with 32-bit applications as the default is to install as a mixed mode environment(both 32 and 64 bit libs and many other packages are installed). Most of my laptop (for example) is 64-bit, but I do have some 32-bit applications and addons to these applaction installed, mainly for compatiblity with the Internet as many plug-ins are 32-bit only still.

A couple of brief examples to demostrate;

$ rpm -qa --qf="%{n}-%{v}-%{r}.%{arch}.rpm\n" 'cu*' | sort
cups-1.2.1-6.x86_64.rpm
cups-devel-1.2.1-6.x86_64.rpm
cups-libs-1.2.1-6.i386.rpm
cups-libs-1.2.1-6.x86_64.rpm
curl-7.13.1-3.i386.rpm
curl-7.13.1-3.x86_64.rpm
curl-devel-7.13.1-3.x86_64.rpm

$ rpm -qa --qf="%{n}-%{v}-%{r}.%{arch}.rpm\n" 'libt*' | sort
libtermcap-2.0.8-39.i386.rpm
libtermcap-2.0.8-39.x86_64.rpm
libtermcap-devel-2.0.8-39.x86_64.rpm
libtheora-1.0alpha5-1.2.1.i386.rpm
libtheora-1.0alpha5-1.2.1.x86_64.rpm
libtheora-devel-1.0alpha5-1.2.1.x86_64.rpm
libtiff-3.8.2-3.i386.rpm
libtiff-3.8.2-3.x86_64.rpm
libtiff-devel-3.8.2-3.x86_64.rpm
libtool-1.5.22-3.x86_64.rpm
libtool-ltdl-1.5.22-2.2.i386.rpm
libtool-ltdl-1.5.22-2.2.x86_64.rpm

Yes you will have a performance hit as 64-bit OS (and the 32-bit applications as well) does run faster then the 32-bit OS, how much I cannot say becuse you did not specify the CPU speeds and other hardware specs. Somewhere between 2 and 18 percent depending on a fair number of factors (memory, application and system load to name a few) for a ballpark figure.
