When/Why to upgrade from 4.5 to 5.x

Postby rogene » 2007/10/17 17:48:22

What are the pros/cons of upgrading from Centos 4.5 to 5.0? My understanding from reading a number of posting is that it is not just a matter of "being current" - there are issues of compatibility with the motherboard, etc..

Could someone please point me to a discussion or site that would help me to determine whether this is in the best interest of my current installation?

Thanks much for your help.

The basic issue is need. Is there something you *need* or want in the newer version.? Keep in mind that CentOS 4.x will be fixed/updated/etc for a while, but the core API pieces will be stable. To make things worse, packages like the kernel version/number are a bit misleading. There are many of the newer kernel updates backported to the older kernel base. Also if you are running apps/services from vendors that only support version x.x, then you know what you have to do. *But* if you need something like gcc-4.1 over gcc-3.4 or the newer system-config-printer (because the old version SUCKS with 150ish local and remote printers) then jump to 5.x.

Heck the peeps at RH have even decided that 4.x can have a taste of Xen backported to it.

Basically, YMMV. Decide with care ;)

For the reasons pjwelsh pointed out, desktop users typically find more reasons to upgrade than server users.

Production server users will typically wait until at least the first release update (e.g., 5.1) to upgrade, if they ever upgrade.

Thank you both very much.

Should I choose to upgrade, how much effort is typically involved? The easiest on the scale would be to upgrade via a yum command line - the most difficult would be to back up all my personal data, downloaded software, etc before doing a complete reinstall from scratch. Perhaps there is a page that provides instructions?

I don't want to make a move before it is necessary, but I am starting to run into a few issues (for example, the gcc version that you mention is needed by one application).

I appreciate your advice and experience in these matters.

I tested a couple of boxes with a 4.5 -> 5.0 DVD update. That went without issue. YMMV! I would still recommend starting fresh *if* possible (extra box etc).
There are some helpful pieces at http://wiki.centos.org/ in general. You could check out the specific one of http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Migration ... D_4.4_to_5
