You don't say what RAID (0,1,5,10,50). You don't mention what you *need* to have Oracle do (eg 500 user OLTP). You don't mention hardware or money constraints. You are basically asking the "what's the best car for me" question, sorry.

That is exactly right...but there are some general considerations:

on a separate partitions:

data files
archived redo logs
backups (automatic or manual/hot or cold [hot only if you are getting archived redo logs])
application software installation (fine with OS stuff if needed)
active redo logs, each group on separate partitions (typical 2)
each control file on a different partition (fine with other things...very few small read/writes)

From what I see on a normal basis with clients:

part-1) datafiles/single active redo log set/single control file
part-2) archived redo logs/single control file
part-3) backups/single control file
-) oracle software on existing partition with OS

Usually I would see part-1, part-2, part-3 on different LUNs (virtual disks, whatever you are using) in the same RAID 5 and OS/oracle software on RAID 1...

personal preference would be part-2/3 on RAID 1

Really not much into telling you this is what you need...just telling you what I see commonly, YMMV
