Installing Gnome through SSH on CentOS 4?

Postby Lucas » 2005/08/28 15:12:28

Hello, I'm totally new, I just got my server and I wanted to install Gnome so after I can install TightVNC to get Remote Desktop administration and I was wondering how could I install Gnome through SSH?

Help is appriciated.

Thanks & Regards.

Edit: I used the command yum install gnome-desktop and I think I got it. It has to download 12mb archives for the installation and agreed. It's done, what should I do now? I want to install TightVNC too. =)

You're on the right track as far as Gnome is concerned.

Just ditch TightVNC and install FreeNX. You'll be glad you did.

FreeNX rpms for CentOS-4 (or just install via yum if you've included the "extras" repo):

http://centos.arcticnetwork.ca/4/extras ... 4.i386.rpm
http://centos.arcticnetwork.ca/4/extras ... noarch.rpm

Windows/Linux clients:

http://www.nomachine.com/download.php

Installation Instructions:

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/ (Ignore that the docs are for Fedora. You won't be using those RPMs anyway.)

CentOS has a Wiki article for the NX here:

Thank you toracat,
Gnome & freenx is much faster / less lag on screen.
I've used realvnc & ultravnc with kDE. All so laggy.

To get the Gnome via ssh installed, use yum:

Code: Select all

yum groupinstall 'GNOME Desktop Environment'

Stop using the ultra/real VNC's. There is a better vnc... the "enhanced" tightvnc and x11vnc from:
http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ give you some options that nx can't (like the actual desktop on console)
They are much better at compression and have tons of good options!
