so i try to compare the scripts that are with Sxxx to start of the run level 3 (no x) with the runlevel 5, and the have the same scrips, only run level 5 have 2 more scripts but that no care about gdm ,

gdm is the gnome display manager
edit the file
/etc/inittab
change id:5 to id:3
(id:1 will give you a single user bootup)
and reboot into runlevel 3 --multiuser session --no Xserver running--yet..
you certainly won't have gdm running
but a command of startx will bring it back to life (X-server)
man inittab will give you a lot of info--but
a simple init 3 at the command line will go straight to runlevel 3 and shutdown the x-server but it will boot up the next time into
the the inittab setting if not edited....

well you could look at
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
it's a script to start the X-window_server
it's configurable with a editor (make a BACKUP copy of it first!)
