In the meantime I've made a few symlnks (ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.23.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/message/fusion/mptspi.ko /lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.23.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/message/fusion/mptsspi.ko) and I'm hoping to get an outage to reboot

It looks like that helped.

After installing the vmware tools 4x and manually editing the modprobe.conf, I got a clean boot.
Something was hosing the conf file, but I have no idea what or why.

I have not made a new image yet to see if it is permanently fixed or not.
