Kernel crash on C7 i386 using official Firefox
Kernel crash on C7 i386 using official Firefox
Hi
I used to use official releases of some software, like libreoffice, firefox, thunderbird and others, because I install them in a separate partition which can be mouted by and shared between all distributions installed on my machine, avoiding to install them separatlely on each one.
I've just installed C7 32 bits. All softwares run fine, either on all Fedora than C5 en C6 including Thunderbird in it's last version, but only Firefox 41 causes a crash kernel and only on this recently installed C7.
So,
1) I don't know howto save a crash kernel message. Is there some way to do it ?
2) Everyone who has an idea of what causes this crash is welcome
Thx

I don't know what you mean by "official releases".
You certainly can't share an installation directory with other distributions for anything supported by CentOS.

I agree with Gerald, I think you should be using the distribution provided version of Firefox rather than an "official release".
In any case you can report a kernel crash using the Automatic Bug Reporting Tool, ABRT.
You can install ABRT using the following commands:
Then you can can access it in the GNOME menu under 'Sundry'.
It should automatically detect your kernel crash and provide options for reporting a bug.

Re: Kernel crash on C7 i386 using official Firefox
Where did you get C7 for i386? I have seen no announcement.
Re: Kernel crash on C7 i386 using official Firefox
It's here, although not officially announced yet: http://mirror.centos.org/altarch/7.1.1503/isos/i386/
Did you run yum update after installing to get the newest kernel? This should be the newest:
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.10.0-229.14.1.el7.i686 #1 SMP Wed Sep 30 15:40:29 UTC 2015 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Re: Kernel crash on C7 i386 using official Firefox
Hi and thanks for replies.
Yes I did all the updates availables. Clearly, if I use the Ff version provided with the iso, it works fine.
But as all other distributions can run the binaries package released by the Mozilla Foundation, i-e Fedora 12 to 21 and Centos 5 and 6, I can't figure out why Centos 7 would not and makes the kernel crash. First I think that it is an issue somewhere which eventually may cause others issues.
Secondly, I don't clearly use every week all the distros I have on the machine, but I'm pleased to be able to switch from one to another, use the same softwares and do the job without even thinking.
Clearly it is not a death or life problem, it is just a challenge to fix that.
I'm going to verify the status of abrt, already installed and eventually install abrt-desktop if missing.

So. Abrt can catch nothing the kernel crash prevent any other action.
I took a picture of the screen, here it is:
(maybe I would have to report this as a bug?)
thx

Yes, I think you need to file a bug report against CentOS 7.0 32 bit that it crashes when you use a specific Firefox binary.
It might also be useful to test other binaries - you mentioned OpenOffice / LibreOffice in your original post.

Well, don't file a bug report against 7.0 since that's old and deprecated. File against 7.1 and make sure that's what you are running first.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thanks for replies
So I'll wait for the update to 7.1. I did a yum update juste after the install and it appears that there is nothing more to do. So I think I have to wait.
And as I said, all other binaries such Libreoffice, Oracle Java or Thunderbird do work fine.
