[SOLVED] Installation on HP Elitebook 850 G4 fails

Post by pjsr2 » 2017/05/08 16:46:47

I am trying to install Centos using CentOS-7-x86_64-Minimal-1611.iso on a new HP Elitebook 850 G4.
I have tried both boot from USB and DVD.

On booting, I get the menu

Code: Select all

Install CentOS Linux 7
Test this media & install CentOS Linux 7
Troubleshooting-->

After selecting the "Install CentOS Linux 7" option, I get a dark screen with only cursor in the top left corner.
Same happens when selecting "Troubleshooting-->" and then from the next menu "Install CentOS Linux 7 in basic graphics mode".

Judging from the blinking light on the USB stick or rattling from the DVD a lot of files are read from the installation medium, but then things get silent and appear to be stuck. Nothing happens on the screen, stays dark (black) with cursor (underscore) in top left corner.

Any suggestions?

I don'T know if your issue is still active or not, but if yes, can you please try to install Fedora Server on the laptop? Also, you can try installing CentOS DVD edition from USB. Honestly I think the problem was with the ISO you've downloaded.

The issue is still there. As my next steps, I was considering two approaches, which are in line with what you suggest:
- Download another image of CentOS and make a fresh USB with that, to exclude errors in the USB stick I prepared.
- Try the latest Fedora. Could be that I need a more recent kernel version than is included in the CentOS images.

Did you try “Troubleshooting” -> “Install CentOS 7 in basic graphics mode” ?

Yes, I tried “Troubleshooting” -> “Install CentOS 7 in basic graphics mode”. See the original post.
I've also tried adding arguments like "nomodeset", various values for "vga=", "text", "inst.xdriver=intel" or installation using vnc instead of terminal, but none of these had any effect.

[Solved] Installation on HP Elitebook 850 G4 fails

I've downloaded a fresh iso for CentOS7 1611, created bootable DVD and USB stick from it, after verifying the iso. Unfortunately, did did not resolve the issue.

I then attempted installation with Fedora-25 and installation went smoothly. I guess the hardware is not supported yet by the kernel version that is used in the CentOS 7-1611 iso.

What software do you use to write the ISO to a pendrive?
With Fedora, I suggest the "Fedora Media Writer", on Windows, "Rufus USB" is the man.

Which Fedora did you install? Server or Workstation? If server it is, then I'm glad that works. It is strange tho because AFAIK the hardware support is the exact same for these op. systems. Do you know the chipset name of your laptop?

( Dang it, why the hell am I still using the word "laptop" when they are clearly not used on your lap anymore? They should be called "MobilePC" or "RemoveablePC". Maybe "FoldablePC"? )

I used dd to copy to the pendrive (on Linux).
Finally, installation is done with Fedora 25 Workstation.

Chipset is integrated in the CPU. CPU is Intel i7-7500u.
Video is an Intel HD graphics 620.

Well, not really "laptop". It's a 15.6 inch screen, so I prefer to have it on a desk :)

If it is not a big problem, I would try creating the bootUSB with the Fedora Media Writer. :) I know and used dd before but I don't think that is the best solution.
