(SOLVED)Does CentOS 7 work on the Dell R900 server?(SOLVED)

Post by Radocruz » 2017/05/27 08:34:58

I want to install some form of Linux on my, "new," server and I wondered if my server model was supported by CentOS 7.

I apologize, I do not currently have the specifications, it's late and I shouldn't dare to boot it up and risk waking everyone up just to find out the hardware.

I would expect CentOS 7 to just work on a Dell R900 though that is quite an old machine (even if it is massive and powerful). I was using R900's back in about 2008/2009 or so.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

For my old server do you have any OS recommendations or should my server run fairly well on CentOS.

Thanks for the help.

Also, is there a thank button like there is in some other forums?

CentOS 7 ought to run OK on an R900. I'd not use CentOS 6 for a new install any more as it is in its final support phase before it goes EOL in 2.5 years so only receives updates for critical security problems.
