broadcom hybrid wireless kmod-wl locks up system (solved)

Hello
I just updated to centos 7.4 but the kmod-wl wireless module from previous kernel 3.10.0-514.26.2 doesn't work, so rebuilt rpm using same method https://elrepo.org/tiki/wl-kmod but it locks the system and have to hold the power button to reboot.
The reboot locks unless I switch off wireless at the hardware switch before booting.
The built in brcmsmac (kernel) module works but is painfully slow (download speed 1.50 Mbit/s compared to kmod-wl 36 Mbit/s)
I realise that even though they're both 3.10 kernels the latest may well have a number of patches not used on the old kernel.
Anyone know of a workaround ?

I haven't used it but modprobe has an -f option.
Maybe you could try this option on the module from the old kernel?

I'll have to stick with the old kernel for now.

I just built and installed the updated nosrc.rpm and can confirm it works with centos 7.4 kernel 3.10.0-693.2.2 on my Dell latitude 6430 with a broadcom BCM4313 wireless chipset
