You just updated to 7.4? I presume you did so make sure you have mate-themes-3.22.13-1.el7.noarch installed then go to Systen->Preferences->Look and Feel->Appearance and I would guess your current theme is one named "Custom". You'll need to redo the customisations you did - pick a different base theme to the one you originally modified then choose the one you did modify again and redo your original changes to it and that should fix it.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

thank you for your answer. I was on CentOS 7.3 but I use GDM as Window-Manager and MATE as Desktop. Well, the MATE Desktop was already compiled against CentOS 7.4, so an upgrade to CentOS 7.4 solved the problem, as you said!
