Pre-update space verifications

Post by MeUser » 2017/11/15 16:40:41

I am trying to find a way to verify that the required space exists in each effected filesystem, prior to executing 'yum update'. The purpose of this is to be able to use this prior to scheduled patching activities to identify and pro-actively correct space issues that will potentially jeopardize the success if the patching. Ideally, it would be great to be able to execute the transaction checking that occurs when 'yum update -y' is executed but, in a dry-run fashion. However, to my knowledge, there is no way to do that. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Space is required in /var/cache/yum and also in the filesystems where the packages will be installed. In-use files on the system will remain in use while the processes using them are still running and the space occupied by the older files will not be released until those processes are restarted. There is no way in advance to calculate what those space requirements might be.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
