GUI initial setup stuck in loop

Post by msmcknight » 2017/11/18 20:24:18

Hi everyone,

I just upgraded (yum upgrade) from Centos 7 3.10.0-514.16.1.el7.x86_64 to 3.10.0-693.5.2.el7.x86_64 and now when the system boots and starts the GUI, it's stuck in the initial setup cycle.

This is where once the GUI starts, it asks for the country you're in, timezone, and wants to create an initial user account. There doesn't seem to be a way to escape out of it and the only way past it is to create some bogus account only to delete it later. Unfortunately, upon the next reboot, it does the same thing.

I'm new to Centos/Linux and really have no idea where to start looking for a problem like this. My guess is that an "initial run" flag of some sort isn't being set, but that's a wild guess.

If anyone can help me troubleshoot/fix this issue, it would be appreciated.

Thanks to you all in advance,
-Michael

What else does it offer to uninstall if you open a root command prompt and run yum remove \*initial-setup\* ?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply. Here's the output of the command you suggested:

gnome-initial-setup x86_64 3.22.1-4.el7 @base 2.5 M
initial-setup x86_64 0.3.9.40-1.el7.centos @base 219 k
initial-setup-gui x86_64 0.3.9.40-1.el7.centos @base 32 k

Are those all safe to remove?

I have none of those installed and my system works perfectly :)

Looks like that worked. I removed those packages, rebooted, and no more initial setup hassle.

Thanks again for your quick help!
