Plz recomnd docs/resource for Install & Admin of Centos7

Post by jeffw_00 » 2017/12/08 18:15:21

Hi - 7 years ago, for a very small company that I'm part of, I bought a PC and put Centos 5.6 on it. I probably did some adjustments to it when I loaded it, but my notes aren't as good as I hoped. We used it solely to run Quartus & Modelsim, and, unfortunately (:-)), the machine was so reliable over the years that what little Centos knowledge I had leaked out of my brain.

It's time to retire this machine, and I'll soon be buying a new PC (2x the speed of the old one), and installing Centos 7. Again, I'm on my own alone, and am not much of a system admin.

Can anyone recommend

a) A good, easy to read resource for straightforward installation

b) A good resource for Centos Adminstration (accounts, updating O/S, etc) (I see 1/2 dozen Centos books on Amazon - are any of them any good).

I know there's free stuff on the web, and that might be fine, but I do have a budget to buy a book. So, whichever.

Thanks!

As far as installation - it's all (or mostly) graphical now - so you'll be able to navigate that part pretty easily.
As far as the admin side of things - that might take some more looking...
"30 Things to Do After Minimal RHEL/CentOS 7 Installation" is a good search term...
What are you ultimately going to be doing with the machine?

we run Quartus/Modelsim (FPGA design tools) and Emacs - that's about it. It needs to support VNC, ssh, sftp, and cmail.

I searched on that term and found the list. Of the steps that I understood most are unneeded. But it would be nice, for example, if a year from now I need to remember how ssh was set up, or how to update Emacs, that I had a reference that I could read.

Ok - I wasn't sure if that was going to be helpful or not..
I'm just now setting up a new CentOS7 VM - so if I think of any I'll try to pass them along.
Reason I asked about the intended usage is that if it's not going to be handling typical web server duties then it could be a pretty bare-bones install.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for anything that looks good.

Have you experimented with Oracle Virtualbox yet? It allows you to test-drive the distributions and create/burn down servers without any risk or hassle.
It might be good for you to get an instance of CentOS7 running in a VM and work on configuring it so that you can go into your new live machine with a bit more confidence.

Yes - bare bones is what I'm looking for - but a "how to" manual for future adjustments would be really helpful - are any of the books on Amazon any good?

Linux Quick Fix Notebook - this is one I've had on my shelf for years and haven't felt the need for another. Things have certainly changed since its first edition - but the meat and potatoes of it should still hold up.

I can only recommend Red Hat's documentation, as CentOS is built from their source.
