installing CentOS (different versions) on dell precision m6800

Post by amoadil » 2018/02/09 06:48:30

After installing CentOS (different versions; CentOS7-1708, 7-1611, CentOS6.5) on my workstation Dell Precision m6800, when I turn on or reboot my device, on a blank page I see this message:

1. [???????] mmc0: Unknown controller version (?). You may experience problems.

the ?????? is a numerical code that differs each time I install the OS.
And the OS was very unstable; for instance, on login page, some times after logging in my device shuts down, and in terminal it seems that when I open terminal, a process is running because every time that I want to close terminal or shut down the system it says that closing that or shut down will kill a process that is running.

I have to give more info:

I tried a SD memory card and it was recognized and I could see its contents.
After that I tried Ubuntu 1604 LTS and I got same message on shutting down.

My workstation config:
CPU Intel Core i7, 4930MX
Graphic card: NVIDIA Quadro k4100
Two hard drives: 1 HDD Seagate, 1 Samsung SSD
Realtek ALC32xx Series HD Audio Codec Driver
There is a SD card reader (sdhci-pci) attached to motherboard

I saw a command on internet which is probably useful here to report its results: lspci

I am naive on computer science and my aim is to use linux for biological simulations, so I will be so grateful if you answer this in simplest way.

Had this same issue on my Dell Precison Laptop. The MMC refers to the Multi-media card reader. This should not affect anything performance wise unless you are trying to use the card reader. On my Dell precision I have linux Mint with Mate desktop installed. If I remember correctly, I was able to over come this by using the latest kernel after installation.

I recommend the latest CentOS and then upgrading to the latest kernel available - Im thinking the 4.14 kernel.
