Man Page subsection definitions?

Post by bodisha » 2018/02/11 15:05:59

Hello... And thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer me

Can anyone point me to a list of definitions of all the Centos 7 man page subsections? I can't find a simple easy list to look at... I can sort of figure out when some of them are (p = posix)... But I was hoping to find a simple quick easy list that explains them all

(0p)
(1)
(1m)
(1p)
(1ssl)
(2)
(3)
(3p)
(3pm)
(4)
(5)
(5ssl)
(6)
(7)
(7ssl)
(7stap)
(8)

Once again... thanks for any help anyone can offer

It's listed in man man
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately the man man page only mentions the main sections (1-9)... and doesn't mention the subsections... I've searched Google for about an hour and read through the wikipedia page... But haven't had any luck finding any specific reference to them... do you have any other suggestions on where I can search? Once again... thanks

I don't think there are any subsections. If you run `man 7 des_modes` you get the same man page that you do if you run `man 7ssl des_modes`.

I listed all the man page groups in my initial post

The following snipet will display all the man pages... with the man page group in the () in the 2nd field

Code: Select all

man -k .

Then I printed out only the 2nd field... sorted it... and they passed it thru uniq

Code: Select all

man -k . | awk '{ print $2 }' | sort | uniq

A total of 17 groups of man pages came back... I know the main groups and some of the subgroups like 1p (Which are POSIX commands)... But there's other groups like 1m, 1ssl, 3pm, 7ssl, 7stap, etc... aren't easily identified

Spent an hour on Google trying to identify the main groups & subgroups but haven't had a lot of luck
