CentOS Freeze

Post by afagund » 2018/03/13 13:16:21

Hi,

I have a CentOS 7 installed with Gnome Desktop. The O.S freezes when I am browsing the internet using Google Chrome. No mouse and keyboard responses and a hard reboot is required to recover. I have been facing this for weeks and I have already tried few thing to fix this.

1. The issue is resolved installing NVidia proprietary driver, however, I have other issues when I update the driver, like kernel update and power management problems.

2. Disabling Chrome GPU does not work.

My GPU is a GTX 650 and my system is fully updated.

Thanks for any advises.
Andre

I was analyzing the messages log right now and saw this.

Mar 13 13:03:55 zeus kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: SCHED_ERROR 0a [CTXSW_TIMEOUT]
Mar 13 13:03:55 zeus kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: fifo: gr engine fault on channel 4, recovering...
Mar 13 13:04:25 zeus journal: driver/gl/gl/cogl-texture-driver-gl.c:436: GL error (1285): Out of memory

It seems the same as https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93629

You know that ELRepo package the nvidia proprietary drivers in a manner such that they survive (most) kernel updates? Install the elrepo-release package, install nvidia-detect and check the output from running nvidia-detect afterwards as that tells you which of their kmod-nvidia packages to install. Those will survive kernel updates until Redhat change the "stable" KABI which _usually_ only happens at point release times.

I read the rest of that bug report and the linked bugzilla.redhat.com one and none of them have a solution, even in the latest 4.15 kernels.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I have already tried that, but I have a issue starting X with NVidia Drivers. I will try again and open a new thread detailing the errors.

Thanks!

Problem fixed buying a new graphic card. If you have a Nvidia GTX 650, forget, it won't work with either nouveau or nvidia proprietary drivers. I tried every combination of drivers and kernel versions and it does not work. I bought a low profile Nvidia card GT210 and graphics were really bad (slow videos, mouse lag) using nouveau, at least proprietary drivers have worked in this case.
