CentOS 7.5 and the Black Screen of Death

Post by desertcat » 2018/05/02 09:45:24

This goes out to TrevorH and/ or the various devels. There is no joy in Mudville, the Mighty Red Hat has struck out [So Far].

I installed CentOS 7.5 via the CR repository using yum update --enablerepo=cr , all goes well everything seems to install more or less; you reboot the machine; it goes through the whorlly doodle and then you get a BLACK SCREEN of DEATH . You are NOT lead to a login page or anything else. Once you get to the BLACK SCREEN of DEATH you need to issue Ctl+Alt+F2 from there it will ask you for a user ID ==> desertcat ==> Password. Once you ave done that issue startx and from there it will then start up the GUI. It is like it can't find the dm to allow for the login page --like it is missing. This is rather klunky. Is this due to a microcode problem or something else? Thankfully I installed CentOS 7.5 on the Trashcan Monster, and NOT my workstation.

Is there a workaround for this problem that will fix it?

Thanks
