[SOLVED] No access to Gnome 3 desktop since upgrade to CentOS 7.5.1804

Post by Valdemort » 2018/05/25 04:58:52

Hi everybody,

during the OS upgrade to 7.5.1804 (Core), Gnome 3 crashed, leaving no other option than closing my graphical session.
Apparently, the OS upgrade was still in progress, so I waited until my hard disk stopped reading/writing. Then, since I had no possibility to switch to a text console (TTY2 for instance), I had to force shutdown my PC with the power button.

After booting again, no graphical login screen was displayed, but this time I was able to switch to a text console and discovered there were pending actions linked to the OS upgrade. I tried my best to complete this upgrade using 'yum', only leaving one package dependency issue unresolved (never mind, that will be something to solve in the future, not my main issue at the moment).

Although my OS seems to be working correctly (I can login as 'oracle' for instance and start/shutdown a training database), I'm still left with no graphical login screen :(

"abrt-cli list --since ..." mentions the following issues:

gsd-keyboard killed by SIGTRAP
gnome-shell killed by SIGTRAP
/var/log/messages mentions the same errors:

What should I check now in order to understand what exactly is going wrong?

I really regret this OS upgrade since everything was working perfectly well before

Thanks in advance for your advice and guidance.

Re: [SOLVED] No access to Gnome 3 desktop since upgrade to CentOS 7.5.1804

Post by Valdemort » 2018/06/22 07:23:39

After almost 1 month, I managed to solve this issue (on my own).

I had decided to first concentrate on duplicate packages, since yum showed there was a bunch of them ("package_xxx_1.8.el7.x86_64 is a duplicate of package_xxx_1.1.el7.x86_64"). Indeed, executing "yum list package_xxx" showed two versions of the same package installed.

So I manually created a shell script containing a succession of commands like:

yum remove -y package_xxx_1.1.el7.x86_64
yum remove -y [etc.]

Then I executed this shell script as root. Some of the "yum remove" commands made yum enter a loop (due to unresolvable dependencies I believe), but the loop stopped automatically at some point and the script continued to run for quite a long time until completion.

Considering a few weeks had passed since my request for help, I then executed "yum update", which installed several package updates (without problems).

In the end, I rebooted my machine and noticed an improvement at last: X11 was starting normally again (first victory) but I was then facing a GDM login screen with no graphical background (just black color) and a list of available users without their usual picture. I tried to login with one of them, reached a Gnome desktop with an unusual black colored background, no desktop icons, and the graphical session soon stopped and I was sent back to the GDM login screen.

Taking a look at /var/log/messages showed many errors stating that image /path/to/image was of an unknown format. And errors mentioning files "not found". It looked like my Gnome installation was incomplete (while still not being sure of the real cause).

So I decided to install the KDE desktop environment (yum group install "KDE Plasma Workspaces").

Afterwards, without rebooting my machine, I switched back to the GDM login screen (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and alleluia! The login screen had recovered its normal graphical background and users' pictures. Login in opened a normal Gnome desktop, all issues were solved!

I later tested opening a KDE desktop, working normally as well.

Phew...
