Can't boot after motherboard replacement

Post by Liran » 2018/07/21 05:35:31

Dell dell precision 5510 with dual boot Win10 pro and Centos 7.
Both OS are on same SSD (Disk 1). There's another 1TB sata (disk 0)
Motherboard was replaced due to malfunction,
Windows in booting without any problems while in two Centos boot options I get errors (see attached screenshots) and finally reach dracut mode.
In dracut I cant mount usb to save all logs and fdisk command is not available.
The first boot options is the last Centos update. The second is the rescue disk.
In dracut I cant see the path in the error message (/dev/cl/root or dev/cl/swap or /dev/mapper/cl-root)

Are nouveau messages related to the video card?
Maybe there's a different video card on the motherboard that was replaced?
Which tools/commands can I use to overcome this problem?

Interrupt the boot process at the grub menu and edit the kernel command line and remove 'rhgb quiet' from it and boot up with that. It won't fix anything but it will show more messages about what's wrong. It appears to be unable to find your disk or the controller it's attached to...
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thanks. Done as you suggested and uploaded some screenshots with errors.
Since you've mentioned grub, I tried grub command line and there was a clue...
I don't know whats hd3 is though.
what would you recommend to do next?

There should be a kernel listed on the grub menu with "rescue" in its name. Does that boot?

Then your only other option is to boot from the install DVD in rescue mode and use that to look around the system and find out what the problem is. I would also check BIOS options and make sure that, e.g. the controller is set to use AHCI mode or whatever mode was in use on the old motherboard. The other possibility is that you've attached the disks in the opposite order to the way round they were before so disk 0 is now 1, and 1 is now 0.

Oh man, you should get the nobel prize for centos!!!
I'm finally replying from Centos... forgot how fast it is compared to windows.
The problem was indeed the AHCI. It was on RAID.
Once I configured it back to AHCI everything got back to normal.

Thanks!!!
