CentOS on i386 using standard DVD, not DL

Post by keith20mm » 2018/08/11 20:17:34

I would like to install CentOS i386. My desktop pc has no double layer capable drive.

Is there some method that the Everything 1804 .iso may be broken into two installable files, or that that I may make a build request to the i386 SIG to produce the Everything .iso as two standard capacity (non-DL double layer) sized files?

The CentOS 7 install located here: http://mirror.centos.org/altarch/7/isos/i386/

CentOS-7-i386-Everything-1804.iso 2018-05-07 13:11 is 7.3GB

I'm about 99.99% sure you don't need or want the "Everything" DVD in any case. The ordinary 4GB DVD contains all packages that you can select from the GUI installer. The things that the Everything DVD contains that are not on the ordinary one cannot be selected using the GUI installer so they're not usable from there anyway. The only real purpose that the Everything DVD serves is for those people who want to set up a local mirror of the base repo.

Bottom line, use the DVD version not the Everything.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Is there some MAD reason you wish to install a OS (CentoS 7.x) which is designed for a 64 bit processor on a 32 bit processor?? Yes I know there is a 32 bit version of CentOS 7 -- I even played around with it, but found it to be crippled. Is there some MAD reason that you are not using CentOS 6, as there are versions for both 32 bit as well as 64 bit processors? The 32 bit version of CentOS 7 is an after thought, that unless it has been significantly improved upon since my experimentations with it a year or two ago is only going to result in frustration. BTW TrevorH is right the DVD version is what you want, not the Everything version. If there is software you need or want the best way to install it (after running yum update first) is to use the yum grouplist to see a list of the software available for installation followed by yum groupinstall "group_xyz"
