Centos 7 terribly slow. Any way to improve?

Post by voleynik » 2018/08/16 14:15:40

Hello friends.
I have a 1 year old Dell PC.
It had original WIn10 on it - it was very fast.
I decided to switch to Linux, particularly to "Centos" because it's the same as RH, which mostly runs in production everywhere.
Downloaded official version of Centos7, installed it. First worked with Gnome.
Painfully slow, everything, even typing in gedit.
Switched to KDE, little better, but hardly acceptable.
What is the method to troubleshoot it?
On windows I would go and disable services one-by-one until your internet access stops.
Then, you enable the last one which killed web access.
This way a very old PC with Win10 would run reasonably fast.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

What are the specs of this machine?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

So that's a decent spec machine. What sort of things are slow? For example, a misconfigured DNS set up (wrong servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf) can lead to 30s timeouts on anything that wants to look up in DNS. That would affect ssh logins to the machine as it does a reverse lookup of the connecting ip address so you'd get a ~30s delay in logging on. Or maybe you're looking at a graphics problem and anything that uses the graphics is slow? Or a hard disk problem - in which case yum install hdparm then run hdparm -tT /dev/sda and show us the output. Also run `top` and see if something is looping and using all cpu.

Narrow it down for us. Which things are slow?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

There's nothing there that shows a problem that I can see. That doesn't mean I don't believe you, it means there's nothing in that data that shows what it is. The cpu is not busy - 94.x% idle in that top output. You have 10GB RAM free and unused. Your disk sequential throughput is 112MB/s which is about average for a spinning rust device (though slow if it's an SSD).

Describe what's slow about the system? What sort of things are you doing that appear slow to you?

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree; what's your graphics card and what driver are you using?

[vo@dell-centos ~]$

Also, I have left my terminal program running over night and I saw the following error messages, which may suggest that my hardware is not healthy:

The most slowest apps are VLC and IntelliJ IDEA, just in case.

Thanks again.

Re: Centos 7 terribly slow. Any way to improve?

I see you have an ATI video card there. Is it using the radeon driver or is it falling back to the catch-all 'vesa' one? Look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for details and if you can't work it out, post it either here or on pastebin.centos.org if it's very large. Wrong video driver would certainly affect vlc, not sure about the IntelliJ thing as I have no idea what that is.

Also, machine checks are never a good thing :-( Do you have mcelog installed and running? If not install it and start it and wait for the next one and post the details from /var/log/messages about it.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
