The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thanks for the replies, i was finally able to install it.
For some reason it kept using http://ftp.nluug.nl/ mirror for epel repo, no matter how many times i cleaned yum. While an other pc on the same network used
https://ftp.cc.uoc.gr and it was able to find cinnamon.
So i edited /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo to metalink=https://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/pub/linux/epel/7/$basearch and then it found the cinnamon desktop and all its dependencies.
You can help me edit the epel, I can not find the line to modify or where to add the one you mention so that it loads cinnamon. thanks

The cinnamon desktop has been removed from EPEL and is no longer available. The previous poster got lucky and found an out of date EPEL mirror that still had it. However, you can no longer depend on cinnamon as it won't get any more updates and I believe it's already incompatible with 7.6.

Newbie question, is all that means that we won't have cinnamon indefinitely?

Unless someone steps up to take over maintenance of the package in EPEL, yes.

Looks like there is now an updated Cinnamon-3.6.7-4 release for CentOS 7.

Not sure when it was posted, or who is maintaining it, but it looks to be working now.

I have had nothing but trouble working with Gnome 3 and trying to set it up the way I like it and the lack of a Super-L (Or even Super-Alt-L) screen locking ability.

Whoever is maintaining Cinnamon now, thank you for the update.

You may want to thank Scientific Linux developer, Pat Riehecky, for that. :)

Thanks for the Update. I had deleted Cinnamon and a few other packages when I did the rollover to 7.6 from 7.5. Like the previous poster I was rather "amused" to find when I ran yum update to see packages for Cinnamon in the update. As a result of your update I have since re-installed Cinnamon, as it is a DE I want to play around with.

I am just glad it is back as I have been trying to get gnome de to work similar to Cinnamon and found that the current Gnome being problematic with regards to Screen Locking (I could not use the Super-Alt-L or any form of keyboard shortcut to lock the screen)

I also prefer the cinnamon-screensaver method of screen locking over xscreensaver.

I did see my system segfaulted on Cinnamon, but couldn't find a reason why it did.
