Of GNOMEs, Caribou, and Cinnamon

Post by desertcat » 2018/12/17 10:44:24

First Merry Christmas and Season's Greetings to all!!. GNOMEs, Caribou, and Cinnamon sounds like a Christmas tale...

OK I have decided to bite the bullet and roll-over the machine, but *this time* before I do anything I want to know what is what. I ran yum update and at the end got this charming ERROR message:

Error: Package: cinnamon-3.6.7-3.el7.x86_64 (@epel)
Requires: caribou(x86-64)
Removing: caribou-0.4.21-1.el7.x86_64 (@cr)
caribou(x86-64) = 0.4.21-1.el7
Obsoleted By: gnome-shell-3.28.3-6.el7.x86_64 (base)
Not found

Yes Cinnamon may be history but even if so I would like to back it up to to some cozy spot on my backup HDD. How does one do that??

Second, beyond Rudolph, I've never heard (herd? ) of "caribou". So I ran yum remove caribou, to see what it wants to delete, and this is what it wants to remove:

Thus removing Cinnamon it and of itself may not solve my Caribou problem. Indeed the caribou may trample all over my GNOME's as well, and affect pulseaudio. We will not even address our Slytherin brothers aka python that caribou also wants to trample as well.

'Twas the week before Christmas and all through my house, this this is one upgrade
I'm not touching, not even with my mouse! The stockings were hung from my wall with care in hopes that TrevorH soon would be there! The cat was nestled all snug in her bed,
While visions of catnip mice danced in her head, I in my robe had just turned out the lights,
was determined to read during these long winter’s nights- When out in the living room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the computer I flew like a flash, went to turn on the monitor, tripped over the cat, then came down with a very hard crash! The Monitors were both on, with pictures of snow, and illuminated the computer in parts on the floor below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but an ASCII minature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer, with a little old coder, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment this sure wasn't St. Nick.

Have a Very Merry Christmas. Any help or guidance how to copy Cinnamon off to some backup place so that I can then safely delete it would be appreciated. And what is Caribou and why does it want to trample GNOME?? Is *it* safe to delete as well?!?

I don't know how you would back up cinnamon - I suppose you could find an archive of old EPEL packages somewhere, but I don't see the point as they will no longer work on any new version of CentOS. However, just remove the cinnamon packages and you won't get the errors with caribou.

I don't have caribou installed but trying to install it says

Package caribou is obsoleted by gnome-shell, trying to install gnome-shell-3.28.3-6.el7.x86_64 instead

Thus it's not required in any case.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
