Two possible and big bugs

Post by kristijonas » 2019/02/11 15:10:24

Hello, I am rather new to Linux and CentOS, but I believe I may have found a couple bugs.

1. At first I installed CentOS with KDE desktop through the GUI installer. This was two days ago. Everything worked absolutely perfectly, I did not change any settings or anything (except display, since I had a 3 monitor setup). Then another day I ran the computer and after typing in all the passwords it simply stuck on loading the desktop. It had those big icons showing up on the bottom of the screen that disappear once it's fully loaded.

Could this have anything to do with me using 3 displays yesterday and then only 1 display today? I would really like to know why this happened.

2. After trying what I could with no success, I decided to reinstall CentOS and used GNOME desktop instead. I must say I don't like it much, not as intuitive or easy to use. That being said, the second problem I encountered was:
1366x768 is the maximum resolution I can choose. Why is that? This laptop has a 1920x1080 display.

Typing xrandr gives:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
eDP-1 connected primary 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 293mm x 164mm

320x180 59.84 59.32
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Please note - I did not change anything in both cases. I simply installed the OS, updated and installed some software (chromium, slack). Didn't mess around with any settings.

The maximum resolution is usually determined by the video adapter in use not the monitor attached to it. What video card does your machine have? Use lspci -nn | grep -i vga to show us.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thank you for your reply.

Here are the results:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520] [8086:1916] (rev 07)

Please note, however, that in my yesterday's CentOS installation (everything was the same except it was KDE instead of GNOME), my maximum resolution 1920x1080 worked perfectly (even though I had to select it manually in KDE display settings). Needless to say, this is very weird: two CentOS installations on the same device installed with the same .iso and one has a problem while the other doesnt'.

Please feel free to share any insights on the first issue I've encountered with the KDE not loading as well, if any.

What is the output from rpm -q xorg-x11-drv-intel. If it's not installed then yum install it.

Thank you for your reply, Trevor!

Here are the results:

I'd be happy to follow any additional steps if needed.

I was thinking, perhaps the bug #1 (No GUI loading with KDE) is a multiple-displays issue?

You see, I first installed Centos7 with KDE when I had 3 monitors. When I experienced this bug later, it was with 1 monitor only connected. Perhaps something got confused there?

I've since reinstalled Centos7... For the third time. It works alright, so far, but recently I've again gotten a problem when loading the desktop environment. Changing between monitors helped solve it.

I would like to get to the bottom of this if anyone wants to fix this one and for all.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

The problem with changing resolution is still awaiting any suggestions as well, even though I've since reinstalled and do not sure GNOME desktop anymore. It would still be good knowing the problem is solved for any potential future users.
