Trying to learn CentOS
Trying to learn CentOS
I have been trying to learn CentOS so I can manage the server. I am currently using shared hosting for my site and soon I will be migrating to VPS or something else.
So, I have some query is the server version of CentOS different from desktop version in any case?
And also as I am learning so I need to practice the linux commands without any problem such as installing apache through yum and running it.
I am currently using windows 7 in pc (I don't have much space in it) and I don't want to change so is there any safe way to practice the codes without using any Virtual Machines or installing linux? I saw some services like cygwin so I was wondering.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Trying to learn CentOS
If you have an old computer sitting around you could put CentOS on it to practice.
Re: Trying to learn CentOS
Unlike RHEL where there are separate desktop and server versions, CentOS there is only one. There is no server/desktop divide in CentOS.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: Trying to learn CentOS
All major cloud vendors provide free tier which will suit your needs.
I can recommend you Google's cloud as the smallest tier is actually 'free tier for life'.
Of course, with the clouds there is a risk of overusage which you will have to pay (so keep that in mind before starting this way).

Re: Trying to learn CentOS
So I have a LiveCD of CentOS and a 64gb free space pendrive. Is it possible that I can install the CentOS in the pendrive as I don't enough space in my computer?
Or, there is also an option that I install a VirtualBox based on that pendrive and then run CentOS in it?

Re: Trying to learn CentOS
You can directly install (which requires bootable media and this huge pendrive) or you can point VirtualBox to store the VM disks on that pendrive.expmrb wrote: ↑2019/02/21 07:28:07So I have a LiveCD of CentOS and a 64gb free space pendrive. I would recommend you the second option, as you will be able to benefit from VM snapshots.
Re: Trying to learn CentOS
Okay, thanks I will go with the second option. And also I am considering Amazon AWS so I will be starting another thread.
