My intuition is that there are hardware incompatibilities that there isn't anything I can about.
I do want to satisfy my curiosity though.
I downloaded an ISO of CentOS 7 live GNOME.
I made a USB stick of the image. I tried it on my very new, advanced computer at home. I got to the desktop. I got a kernel error message, then it froze.
I tried again with an old machine at work, both with the USB stick and with the ISO made into a live DVD. Both times the boot process stopped cold at
[OK] Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes
Any ideas what this was about?

Use of the Live media is not recommended except to boot up in an emergency situation.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
