Fresh install RAID5 only boots once after visit to BIOS

Post by Maktos » 2019/02/21 17:44:51

My new PC with CentOS 7 will only boot after going into the BIOS and then selecting save & exit.
Even when it successfully boots, it gives an error: "raid5rec.mod not found" and requires that you press a key.

I have (3) identical 2 TB hard drives in software RAID5 configuration.
Then I have (1) 250 GB ssd drive which has 2 "standard" partitions *no RAID at all on this ssd hard drive*
/boot/efi - EFI partition
/fast - a random XFS partition for when I want to load something fast.

Only the 250 GB shows up in my BIOS - that might be a EFI vs. compatibility mode issue with my motherboard (ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming)

When I do a software reboot, Grub gives 4 error messages and I can't get past it without rebooting.

error: File '/EFI/centos/x86_64-efi/raid5rec.mod' not found.
error: no such device: 5ad5659d-804c-4ebc-ba56-f335c2d9468d
error: no server is specified.
error: you need to load the kernel first.

How can I fix this? What am I missing?

Thank you in advance!

I added a 4th hard drive today, without RAID, to be the boot partition -- just to simplify matters. I reinstalled CentOS 7 from scratch.

But the booting situation is exactly the same! I'm quite stumped.
(NOTE: I updated my post, above, to reflect the new information. I changed quite a bit of it.)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matthew

The bit about needing to go into the BIOS and save and exit sounds more like a hardware problem. Did you change the CMOS battery already?

I don't have a UEFI system since I think it's overly complicated and gives very little benefit but running locate raid5rec shows me that file in at least two different locations. I would suggest copying it to the place where it's complaining that it doesn't exist and see if that changes anything.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Booting a system in general seems overly complicated.

My board has some kind of "compatibility mode" which I believe needs to be set unless I'm running Windows 10 with their Secure Boot initiative.

But compatibility mode opens up to BIOS (MBR) based booting, rather than EFI.

But on the other hand, when I installed CentOS it absolutely insisted that I allocate a /boot/efi partition of type "EFI PARTITION".
It suggested a swap partition, which I declined and it let me continue. But the EFI it wouldn't let me continue the install until I fixed it.

Does that mean that I am currently set to EFI mode in my BIOS?

The CentOS isos are enabled for both Legacy BIOS and UEFI (as long as they haven't been corrupted when being copied to a USB stick). If it was asking for a /boot/efi partition then it's installed in UEFI mode.
