Extremely slow installation

Post by ranshalit » 2019/08/12 06:27:12

Hello,

I try to install centos 7 minimal installation, on Intel's atom (e3940), and it is *extremely* slow (about an hour or more!)
I tried with both usb and cd rom.
Same installation is installed on my laptop in few minutes.

Any idea what's wrong ?

Thanks,
ranran

Sounds like you don't have enough RAM.

Try with USB and use "Fedora media writer" to copy the ISO to USB. We had many problems using USB/ISO and CD to install CentOS 7, while the same usb would work fine in another computer to install centos. These issues were resolved when using "Fedora media writer" to copy the iso image to usb. May be you have the same issue?

If I need to start a new thread, I can. I am having the same issue.

Trying to install CentOS 7 on an Atom (E3950 or E3930, with 8GB RAM) and have had an extremely hard time of it. The start up is ridiculously slow after it notices the cpu has a stepping it doesn't notice and then at random places during the load process (not even getting to the install screens) it will stall out and not progress. I tried using the the Fedora Media Writer and it gets further than the other USB writer (I used rufus), but still stalls at different places.

Any ideas? I have attached a picture I took of the screen where it is stuck this time. I don't know how to get any logs from this as it hasn't even gotten to the install menu.

And how long did you wait for?
CentOS 5 died in March 2017 - migrate NOW!
CentOS 6 goes EOL sooner rather than later, get upgrading!

I waited for several hours. I set it up and walked away and checked in periodically. It was most of yesterday and then I restarted the boot process and waited at least an hour an half this morning.

OK there are a few possible suggestions:
1) Download a copy of the DVD.iso and do you install from there. Do NOT choose Minimal Install -- that is only asking for trouble. Choose instead *something* (can't remember) +GUI. The default is GNOME.

2) Make sure you downloaded a CLEAN copy by running sha256 on the downloaded copy. It almost *sounds* like you have a corrupted install file. Best way: Start over.

Usually a SLOW install is due to a corrupted file.

I have a new download image and confirmed it installed on another machine, so image is good. I chose to use basic graphic mode installation and it got further than the other screen I showed, but still stops short of getting to the point where I can even start installation. See attached image for errors.

Sorry to say this, but I downloaded an Ubuntu image (18.04) and was able to get to the install process without issue. So I know the USB, cpu, etc are all good. I really want CentOS on this system for a number of applications that only support CentOS. Any ideas why I can't get further?
