gui terminal server for remote access

Post by tony_down_under » 2019/08/29 05:03:41

I have used Windows Remote Desktop Protocol quite a bit and I like it's simplicity. Being able to feel snappy when connecting remotely, as it's able to cope with slow connections and packet loss to some extent.

Is there any such thing for Linux / CentOS ? There are two main parts to this, the server and the client. I have tried VNC in the past and it was too slow from the client end. I have tried NOMACHINE a while ago but it's not open source.

My goal seems simple when I type it - to configure a gui access server that could be used by one or more people to access a GUI with web browser from Windows or Mac or Linux clients.

Any recommendations on tried and tested approaches are welcome. At the moment I have a Windows terminal server that can be RDP'd into. Would like to replace this with CentOS 7/ Gnome. To allow users the same or similar functionality in terms of logging in, accessing a desktop and using a web browser.

I was wondering if the client could use their local browser to log into a web portal and access the gui desktop through their local browser? With this, all clients would be supported immediately, especially if the portal is html5. <- this was just an idea while I was typing, so I googled it and found this: https://sourceforge.net/projects/thinvnc/
Status is `Alpha` though.

Have never used, but http://ltsp.org/ has been around for quite a while.
