Umlauts before the output commands

I now get umulats an u with dots over it before the output of most commands.
example: mkdir -p /home/test
mkdir: cannot create directory Ü/home/test: Permission Denied.

I figure this is something simple but I have no idea why or when this started, any help would be greatly appreciated.
