Hard Lockups on every boot driving me crazy

Post by pangy101 » 2019/02/20 10:07:31

Hi everyone I've got an ASUS 550C laptop with dual boot CentOS 7 and Win10. Every time I boot I get a few emails with hard lockups messages. The computer hangs for about 30 seconds each time then carries on. I've checked the email logs but they don't mean much to me.

I did see messages about 'nouveau' and with this being a laptop, I tried installing the nvidia drivers from the EPEL repo, and also installing Bumblebee as it's a mobile nvidia card. Unfortunately the hard lockups are still occuring... I'll post an extract of the email log of the hard lockup - if anyone has any ideas that would be great... or just let me know which other logs you need to see and I'll upload them.

Appreciate the help as it's driving me crazy :D

You're using a 7.4 kernel on what says it's a 7.6 system. You should be using a kernel with a version number of 3.10.0-957.* not 3.10.0-693.*.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Ah ok, I just let it autoboot from the top entry on the Grub screen, do I need to change the default one then?

The current kernel is 3.10.0-957.5.1.el7.x86_64 and is the one you should be using.

When I do "uname -r" it comes up with: 3.10.0-957.5.1.el7.x86_64
So it looks like I'm using the 957 version? Does anyone have any suggestions please?

So what's the crash when using the -957 kernel?

That's the lockup message that comes up when it loads on the 957 kernel, not sure why the lockup would say it's the older kernel?

Because it is. That was from a older kernel not from the current one.

Excuse my ignorance but doesn't the uname prove that it booted on the 957, or is there another way to confirm this?
