It's not Samba that provides DNS. It's the /etc/resolve.conf as I said in the OP

Am I wrong in thinking named is a core module of Centos?

https://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Depl ... -bind.html

So how do I correctly configure bind to act in the way you suggest?

If not for here, then can you suggest which forum might be able to help?

No, it is samba. You have to set bind up and it's complicated and you would know if you'd done it. I suspect all you need to do is tell samba that you want it to forward DNS queries onwards using the instructions in https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/DNS
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I have a similar problem. I am running CentOS7 in a KVM. It is configured with SAMBA4 as the AD/DC. I run all the tests on the server and everything is fine except this command: host -t A dc1.midlands.org.

This command returns: Host dc1.midlands.org. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

When I use: host midlands.org I get the following. midlands.org has address 192.168.10.251

So it appears my Samba DC is not providing the correct information. I have searched the net for an answer and have found none. I know this is a samba4 question, but I can't seem to find a Samba forum.

Anyone have any ideas how to solve this? I am looking for a simple supportable AD/DC for a customer that can be administered by someone who is familiar with Windows but not Linux.

Many thanks.
