VirtualBox repo

Post by lightman47 » 2015/04/11 14:34:48

I added the virtualbox repo to my CentOS7 installation and yum installed the app. I then went looking for the akmod and discovered there seems to be none. I chose virtualbox because I got it easily running on a couple of my Fedora 20 machines.

My question then becomes: Is it likely an akmod will show up in the near future, or do I commit myself to reinstalling with every kernel rollout?

Thank you.

If you are talking about the virtualbox repo from Oracle, then yes, there is no akmod package.

No and no. If you install dkms (offered by epel-release repo) the virtualbox kernel modules will be rebuild on kernel update automatically.

Quoting from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads :
Note: Users of Fedora/Mandriva might want to install the dkms package (not available on openSUSE) to ensure that the VirtualBox host kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt and vboxnetadp) are properly updated if the linux kernel version changes during the next kernel update.
