vlc player "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///..."

Post by taylorkh » 2016/01/24 02:13:48

vlc player 2.2.2 installed on CentOS 7.2. If I attempt to open VIDEO_TS.IFO or VTS_01.IFO in the VIDEO_TS directory of a video DVD I am receiving an error message "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///home/ken/Desktop/Movi%20Name%20%281941%29/VIDEO_TS/'. Check the log for details." There does not appear to be a log and my on-line searching shows a lot of other users unable to find any logs either.

Interestingly I can open the same file using vlc 2.2.0 on Ubuntu Mate 15.04 and vlc 2.0.2 on CentOS 6. The CentOS 7 and Ubuntu installs are right out of the box - no customization nor preference tweaks to vlc. This leads me to thing that there is some missing package. However, I installed all of the usual multimedia suspects as recommended on the CentOS Wiki (gstreamer{,1}-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad-nonfree gstreamer1-plugins-bad-freeworld lsdvd) from the nux-dextop repository. No difference.

I can play the individual VOB files from the DVD. I only cannot start the whole DVD using the IFO files. Any ideas?

TIA,

Ken

I received an email telling me that giulix63 had posted a reply.

Thanks anyhow giulix63,

Based on feedback over at linuxquestions.org I found that I can right click on the directory containing the DVD files ad "Open with > " and select vlc. I get two error messages - one for each IFO file I guess. I can close the error message window and vlc will proceed to play the entire DVD.
