When I installed CentOS 7.0 so long ago, I posted that my videos that played in CentOS 6 ceased running with VLC. Actually, the video portion ran, but there was no audio. Regardless of any of my efforts, I was required to reboot into Windows - in which VLC would play them.
Yesterday, yum update installed vlc-2.2.2-6.el7.nux.x86_64. My videos all play correctly again.

The newer vlc there has support for the Opus codec that's commonly used on youtube.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
