CentOS

I installed a new CentOS 7 system using the minimal download. From there, I installed MATE using the instructions on this page:

I then installed tigervnc-server and (as a user) started VNC.

When I connect to the vnc session, it doesn't have a functioning desktop. All I see is that Firefox starts, but nothing else. I have a mouse pointer, but right-clicking does not bring up a menu. I removed the existing xstartup file to see if that changed anything: it did not.

Any ideas?

Installing extra packages (as described on this page: https://www.rootusers.com/how-to-instal ... s-7-linux/) solved the issue.

The solution that I mentioned earlier wasn't really what I wanted.

When I start a vnc session, it starts with a gnome-classic desktop, but I really want a mate desktop. How to make this happen?

After logging into the machine locally, instead of via VNC, any new vnc sessions result in an almost blank window. vnc-config is showing, but no desktop at all. Neither MATE, nor Gnome. X is clearly running.

Is there some magic I need to do with ~/.xinitrc or some other file?
