Dash to dock Gnome extension outdated in CentOS 7.4?

Post by jimj » 2017/09/23 17:42:10

I use the Dash to dock extension. As of 23SEP2017 it's only at version 45, but according to https://micheleg.github.io/dash-to-dock/ Gnome 3.22 support wasn't added until version 54 (released 10SEP2016) and version 61 is the current release (as of 23SEP2017). Anyone know if the rpm version of this extension is going to be updated?

Steps to replicate:
  1. If you don't already have it installed run 'yum install gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-dock' as root
  2. Open the "GNOME Tweak Tool"
  3. Go to "Extensions"
  4. Click the gear icon to the right of "Dash to dock"
  5. Go to the About tab
  6. Version is listed as 45

Since the version we supply already has 3.22 in its version number I suspect it works as-is.

gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-dock.noarch 3.22.2-10.el7 base
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Why don't you install and update a Gnome extension the "Gnome" way i.e. opening https://extensions.gnome.org/ in Firefox, search for "Dash to Dock" and enable the extension there by clicking at "On/Off"?

You have to "yum install gnome-shell-browser-plugin" first to enable Firfox to connect to Gnome extensions. For reference: viewtopic.php?t=47341#p259708

I suggest to do a "yum remove gnome-shell-extension-dash-to-dock" before installing it directly from Gnome.

You can also check your installed extensions and update them later at https://extensions.gnome.org/local/

Seconding George's response. I have 7.4 on multiple VM's all running Dash to Dock latest with no issues. If you don't want to use Firefox, you can also build it from source or download the shell/release zip file and install manually.

AFAIK I haven't encountered any problems yet with the RPM version. I prefer using RPM versions of software as they usually do a good job of updating themselves without me ever having to think about them again. If i do have problems with the RPM I'll remove it and install it via the Gnome way.
