DELL R730 and CentOS7.4

Post by barebrad » 2017/11/10 21:19:14

I have a new, out of the box R730. Trying to install CentOS 7.4. I have tried PXE, boot from CD and using the Lifecycle Controller. I have toggled RAID/HBA as well as BIOS/UEFI. Anything I try and it locks up. I finally installed CentOS7.2 using LC. This works. System will boot. I then update to 7.4 and system will not reboot with 7.4 kernel. Installed the source for the 7.4 kernel as well as 3.18.79. Copied 7.2 .config and rebuilt both kernels. Neither will boot. They lock up almost immediately. Turned off the quiet option and last messages are:
UDP-Lite hash table entries
NET: Registered protocol family 1

What does it take to load 7.4 on a R730?

What's you hardware spec? I have an R730 initially installed with 7.3, which upgraded to 7.4 without problems.
My hardware spec: 2x Xeon E5‐2640 v4, 128GB ram, H730 RAID controller, QLogic 57800 2x10Gb

Boot without both rhgb and quiet and see what that looks like.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

How did you install 7.3? I tried the lifecycle controller but it won't perform the reboot and install... I've tried just booting from CD and it doesn't work either. I'll get the specs when I get back into my lab.

Don't remember, long time ago ... usually I just insert the DVD and it works fine.
Since 7.2 works I guess the checksums are ok?
For the same reason I don't think an USB stick will make any difference, but it may be worth a try.
Hardware problem? Maybe you could run memtest and maybe stresslinux.
You also could try another distro in order to rule out hardware problems.

Read my post again. Boot without BOTH rhgb and quiet. You only mention removing quiet.

Does it boot if you just select the older 7.3 kernel from the grub menu while leaving the rest of 7.4 installed?

I started with 7.2 and upgraded to 7.4. (don't know if that matters) yes, the 7.2 kernel boots fine.
