GUI Is not opening

Post by PrateekVHegde » 2018/04/11 12:34:47

I installed the nvidia quadro 600 gpu driver on centOS 7 machine from the gui terminal after that GUI is not at all getting opened. When I give the "startx" command I am getting the error Server terminated with error (1) message. X init unable to connect to X server.
What should we do?

What, exactly, did you install and how?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

We recommend use of the nvidia drivers from the ELRepo yum repo. They repackage the same drivers that nvidia release but in such a way that they are installed using yum and use the RHEL/CentOS kernel stable KABI so that the drivers survive (most) kernel updates. Using the .run file method means that your drivers will break each and every time there is a kernel update.

Additional packages are often in 3rd party repos. Information on additional CentOS repos is available at http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories Pay attention to the reference on yum-priorities.

Once you have ELRepo installed as a repo, use yum install nvidia-detect then run nvidia-detect and it will tell you which of the ELRepo kmod-nvidia packages to install. Given that RHEL 7.5 has just been released and that has broken the "stable" KABI, you may need to install the older version of the packages that is for 7.4 since CentOS 7.5 has not yet been built/released.

As part of the nvidia driver install, you had to blacklist the original 'nouveau' driver by adding files to /etc/modprobe.d/ so the driver that would have been used after the install for nVidia chips would no longer be allowed to load. If you then install the wrong nvidia proprietary driver then you end up with no available drivers.

Undo everything that you did and try the ELRepo method instead.
