DRPM Centos 6&7

Post by grumpy_cat » 2018/04/13 17:01:02

Hello everyone,

I'm new here, so at first I wanna to apologize if I post topic on wrong group.

Last few weeks I was trying to find difference and similarities for DRPM in CentOS 6 and 7 but weren't very successful with that.
Can anyone help me with that, also if you know for some useful links?

Thank you for replies.

You think drpm's are different between the two versions?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Sorry but something doesn't make sense here.

From my POV, a DRPM is a delta RPM - one that has been processed to eliminate anything that's duplicate between it and the previous version that you're updating from. They are used to reduce the size of the data to be downloaded when you run yum update and really only useful for people on bandwidth restricted networks. When you use yum with drpms, they are downloaded and then yum processes the delta along with the original and reconstructs the full rpm and then installs it. They're optional and can be disabled in which case yum uses the full size, ordinary rpm instead.

What do you think a DRPM is?

Yes I know that delta rpm is using to download only differences when you updating some package, and it's for users with restricted bandwidth.
But for some reason I was thinking that are some differences in delta rpm in CentOS 6 and 7.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about delta rpm, just known what is purpose of that package so I was wanna to check with some who have advanced knowledge in CentOS.

Thank you once again and sorry for asking dummy questions.

The use or non-use of DRPMs should be entirely transparent. Personally I have them disabled as they take longer to download the smaller drpm and re-assemble it than it does to download the full sized rpm itself and just install it. As far as an end user is concerned, they ought to be identical as far as the end result goes - both end up with the reconstructed rpm at the end and that's the bit that actually gets installed. Since entirely different rpms are used for CentOS 6 and 7 - you cannot install an el6 rpm on an el7 system or vice versa - it doesn't make any difference.
