polkitd high cpu usage for at least hours

Post by paulrichards321 » 2018/06/28 20:03:51

For some reason once polkitd starts it keeps running, for hours, and it appears, even days. It has been doing this for well over week now. I reboot, but some time later it starts up again. It takes up between 6%-70% cpu usage, usually hovers around 7% cpu usage and my laptop's fan kicks on. If I kill it it just respawns and does the same thing. A google result shows clearing ~/.pulse and ~/.dbus folders. I just deleted my ~/.dbus folder, disabled all gnome extensions (was running Dash to dock) and rebooted into 3.10-862.3.3 from 3.10.0-862.3.2.el7.x86_64. I have some Pulse Secure VPN software but I usually I only use it for 15 minutes then logoff, but I suspect that could also be the culprit.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this recently. Will do more research and post what I find later.

I think first it happened to me after I did "Update and restart".

Seems problem not related just polkitd. I restarted the dbus service (systemctl restart dbus) and the load immediately went down to normal.

It can be seen that after 20 hours of getting it back from suspend state the load started to increase. I have checked secure and messages log backward when the increased load started but nothing extraordinary happened that time. Does anybody have an idea how can the polkitd or dbus force to log to a file?

I've done a bit research and posted here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1600161#c3

A workaround that I've been using is to remove /etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Account.desktop until the above mentioned bug is fixed. The only function you will lose is the notification of expiring account password.

Thanks mlogic, I'm attempting to use your workaround, deleted that file and restarted my system. Wish I had more time to look into this. I will report back tomorrow!

mlogic, your workaround did indeed solve the problem on two separate systems! Thanks!!!

Yes, it worked for me also, system running for 35 hours without any problem, but they should resolve it with some daily update on CentOS!

Sadly deleting/moving the autostart file did not help in my case.

But the other suggestion from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1600161#c3 worked very well for me!

Code: Select all

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.account notify-period 0
I have again a system usage of 3-10% instead of 20%
