Oops. It was along with the OpenSSL update (11 Jul). So I guess it could indeed be the OpenVPN update. In any case I can't find what to do to fix it. There are references to adding a auth-user-pass to the config file but that is for accessing the server not for starting OpenSSL. I don't find anything on that password (I know what it is) or where to save it or why it is suddenly even needed.

If it's an openvpn problem then I suspect you might be better off asking on an openvpn specific venue. I think they have a mailing list, probably an IRC channel, don't know about forums.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
