I'd suggest not looking at the output from abrt (which is junk in any case) and look directly in /var/log/messages. Any kernel crash/oops/panic will get logged in there unless it is one that kills the entire machine.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
