gnome and vncserver -screen 1920x1200x32 color depth problem

Post by ron7000 » 2019/05/13 18:18:46

I like the old backgrounds from winxp: Win7-Red-1920x1200.jpg.
I made that as my desktop background in gnome.
When I remote in via vnc, if I type only vncserver then the color depth I think defaults to 8... whatever it's really grainy and ugly.

The partial solution is to do vncserver -screen scrn 1920x1200x32. And this is with tigervnc-server

I think this is no different than multiple arguments of -geometry 1920x1200 and -depth 32 ?

So if my background is the Win7-Red-1920x1200.jpg image, upon first log in via vnc it is still grainy.

However if I simply right click Change Background and reapply the pic then it's nice and crisp with 32 bit color depth as the desktop background displayed through vnc.
Is this a bug with gnome? Is there some setting in gnome to make the grainy 8 bit image not come through on first vnc connection?

here is everything that vncserver will spit out for options

Code: Select all

so it seems it's only upon first window opening of vncviewer into your session that the grainyness is there, if you do nothing.
open the applications menu and move mouse around in that but don't need to open anything,
in about 5-10 seconds the background will snap to full color depth on it's own.
