Unable to install CentOS 7 on an old HP Compaq DC5850

Post by Karl-Erik Kald » 2017/03/19 11:03:09

I'am unable to install CentOS 7 on an old HP Compaq DC5850 that I want to set up for my mother so she could have a computer she could use for the internet browsing, e-mail reading, word processing and etc. However the installation fails pretty soon. I've made pictures about the computer and the error message, also have a short video about the booting process. The computer has the following specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200B at 2.7 Ghz, 2GB of RAM, AMD 780V chipset, ATI Radeon 3100 IGPU, a Broadcom network card and 160GB hard drive. I should also mention that the computer already has Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed on it, but I want to install CentOS 7 because it is supported longer and is probably more light-weight thus it runs faster on an old computer like this.
Anyways, thank you for reading this and even bigger thank you if you've found time to answer to my question and maybe even solved the problem. :)

Thanks for reading and replying to my post!
Are you sure it is related to my USB-media? I made the media on my Windows 10 PC (HP Compaq DC7800 SFF) using the latest version of Rufus. In fact I did it twice to the same USB-thumbdrive to make sure the media wasn't causing the issue here. Made no difference, the same problem stayed. But can anyone tell me what do these error messages mean. I'am the beginner when it comes to Linux's core, so I don't quite understand it.

That's a kernel crash. Are you using the 7.3 "1611" media or the older 7.2.1511 version? There was a known bug in the older one that crashed on AMD machines and that should be fixed in 1611 so make sure you are using that and not the old one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Yes, I've downloaded the 1611 version of CentOS 7, right from the main download site.

Are there any other options? Do I really have to currently install CentOS 6 and then maybe later upgrade to the version 7 (or maybe even higher version if it's out by that time) once this issue has been completely fixed?

That appears to be a different crash to the one that was fixed in 7.3 and it also doesn't look like the one you get from a badly made USB stick. My next step would be to run memtest86+ on the machine and see if that finds any problems but I'm not sure it's RAM related either. Still worth a try though, just to make sure.

Do you have any BIOS options about NMI's or watchdogs or cpu frequency? Are you overclocking?

Did you check the sha256sum of your iso file against the list published in the release notes? https://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes

So I started Memtest and the computer passed it so the RAM shouldn't be causing any issues here. By the way, it is not possible to overclock this machine since it is a business-class brand-PC, so it has a very basic BIOS with very little options to adjust. If you're interested, here are the specs for this PC: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ ... -c01587145. I also compared the SHA256 value of the ISO-file and the one in the link you provided and they match, so there's no problem with that either.
