Is the i7-4770k supported?
My install keeps locking up when installing the microcode_ctl package. Does anyone know if the this CPU is compatible with CentOS 7?

That sounds like a known bug in 7.3. You might try the rolling release media or try enabling the updates repo in your current install. The bug is fixed in newer microcode_ctl packages but the version on the DVD is broken for certain models of cpus. Or perhaps if you can exclude the package entirely and install it post-install.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Those sound like good tips but I'm not sure how to go about them. I don't have a current Cent install, and am just starting out with the ISOs, 1611 releases. Is there a rolling release with that bug fix avail?

The 1705-01.iso didn't work either. No matter what, it locks up during the install process.
