Raid 1 compatible 1151 Motherboard

Post by debergz » 2017/08/29 07:59:56

Hi.

They ask me to build a centos 7 server, based on Intel i5-7500. Could you please suggest me a 1151 full compatible motherboard (a cheap one) that has raid 1?

Thanks in advance...

There will be approximately none. Motherboard RAID is almost exclusively FakeRAID and is not recommended for use with Linux.

That simplifies your choice since it means that you can concentrate on getting the best board for your needs not on the RAID aspect of it. If you need RAID then get a hardware RAID PCIe card that has linux drivers or use Linux Software RAID or get a proper server with built-in hardware RAID. Do some research and make sure that anything you buy that advertises RAID functionality is actually real hardware RAID and not FakeRAID (a.k.a BIOS RAID, "motherboard RAID" etc).
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

What about if I want to use a "fake" raid using motherboards controller-bios. Is any compatible motherboard at range of 100 usd?

You won't benefit from that desire.
Yes, the BIOS/UEFI/ROM appears to do something, but in reality it is the OS software driver and CPU that do all the work.
Therefore, (soft) options are:
1. Linux software raid
2. (same) Linux software that pretends to be a fake raid
In other words, you gain nothing (but possibly trouble) by using the fake on a server.

You did not tell what the server is for. There are different server load profiles. Depends on the applications.

I think they want to make a web server.

They want to build a pc based on i5 7500, running Centos 7 and asking me for some specifications.
On specifications they asking for raid 1. Thats why I am looking for a compatible 1151 fakeraid motherboard .

Thanks in advance

Really, save yourself future grief and don't use FakeRAID. If you want RAID and don't want to pay for a hardware RAID card then use Linux Software RAID (mdadm). It's easy, reliable and just works.
